Músicos sediados em Nova York apresentam o seu último álbum “Mahoroba” editado pela conceituada Fresh Sound New Talent.
Akiko Pavolka is a Brooklyn-based musician, composer and educator who’s strikingly original music blends pop and jazz with the music and sensibilities of her native Japan. Akiko was born in Tokyo and grew up in Yokohama. Her newest recording, her fifth as a leader, is “Mahoroba” for the Fresh Sound New Talent label. It features her band House Of Illusion (Loren Stillman, Nate Radley, Matt Pavolka and Bill Campbell) and her long-time friend Guillermo Klein performing a set of her brand-new compositions with Japanese lyrics. Pavolka moved to New York in 1995 after attending Berklee College of Music in Boston and formed House Of Illusion shortly thereafter. She has been performing regularly ever since at venues such as Joe’s Pub, Cornelia Street Café, The 55 Bar, Shapeshifter Lab and Barbes. She has also toured in the United States, South America, Europe and Japan. Most recently she headlined at the Buenos Aires Jazz Festival in Argentina and also at Guimaraes in Portugal.
This special edition of House Of Illusion brings together members of the band (Akiko will be joined by Matt Renzi, Matt Pavolka and Bill Campbell) in an intimate quartet format to explore a broad selection of Pavolka’s compositions.
“Deeply felt vocals sung in Japanese against a band perfectly in tune with her timbre and phrasing define pianist/vocalist Akiko Pavolka’s Mahoroba… Pavolka’s voice is deeply resonant, hyper-mature in a way and carries with it a gorgeous round resonance… her piano style is measured and likewise richly tonal, imparting an overall harmony to compositions that stylistically borrow from and blend together pop, jazz and Japanese balladry.” – Elliott Simon, The New York City Jazz Record

“A incoerência, a falta de um fio condutor, a insinuação da quase ausência de projecto e a falta de diálogo no grupo, são os factores que mais valorizamos…“
